African Ambassadors participate in a session on the 2026 Elections at Stockholm City Hall

Stockholm, 27 August 2026 — African Ambassadors accredited to Sweden participated, on 27 August 2026, in an information session on the 2026 Elections in Sweden, held at Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset), at the invitation of H.E. Olle Burell, President of the Stockholm City Council.

The meeting aimed to provide the African Heads of Mission with a better understanding of the structure, organisation and functioning of the Stockholm City Council, as well as of the local governance system and the organisation of the Swedish electoral process.

During the session, information was provided on the elections scheduled for September 2026 and on mechanisms for citizen participation at different levels of governance. The discussion also covered the electoral participation of Swedish citizens residing abroad, as well as issues related to inclusion and civic participation.

The session also provided an opportunity for an exchange of views on issues of common interest, including civic education, youth participation, accessibility of the electoral process, the use of new technologies, public trust in democratic institutions, and the challenges posed by disinformation in the digital environment.

The participation of the African Ambassadors provided a valuable opportunity to learn from Swedish experience and to promote dialogue and the sharing of good practices between African and Swedish institutions in the areas of democratic governance and citizen participation.

For Mozambique, the meeting also provided an opportunity to gain further insight into relevant experiences in civic participation, inclusion and the use of technology in democratic processes — areas of growing importance for societies undergoing transformation.

On the margins of the session, the importance of exploring new opportunities for cooperation between Stockholm and African cities was also highlighted, including in areas such as urban governance, digitalisation, mobility and transport, waste management, water and sanitation, environmental sustainability, youth and citizen participation.

Following the information session, the African Ambassadors took part in a guided tour of the historic Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset), where they had the opportunity to learn more about some of the building’s most emblematic spaces and to appreciate its historical and institutional significance.

The initiative represented an important opportunity for institutional diplomacy and the exchange of experiences between Africa and Sweden, contributing to strengthening contacts between African diplomatic missions and the local authorities of Stockholm.

The Embassy of Mozambique in Stockholm values initiatives of this nature, which contribute to deepening dialogue, mutual understanding and cooperation between Mozambique, African countries and the Kingdom of Sweden.
