Characteristics of the province

Area: 105,008 sq. km
Borders: Nampula and Niassa to the north, Sofala to the south, Malawi and Tete to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east.
Main products: Coconut, tea, shrimp and precious stones.
Population density: 30 inhabitants / sq. km
Most represented ethnic group: Chuabo and Macua

Quelimane

Is an important river port, located on the Rio dos Bons Sinais. Quelimane is known for the affability and friendliness of its residents.

Getting to Quelimane

To visit the city, there are regular flights from Maputo or Beira. However, if you have an adventurous spirit it is possible to go by road from Beira (Dondo – Caia – Nicoadala), from Nampula or via Malawi, through the border of the Milange district.

Beaches

Zalala beach
This wonderful beach of endless white sand is reached from Quelimane from 45 km of tarred road to the northeast. Dense and leafy casuarinas trees line the beach.

Other famous beaches in the province are: Zalala, Pebane, Muceliwa and Cabuiri, among others .

Mountains and Countryside

Gurue
This mountain region in the northern part of the province has extensive areas of tea plantations. The second highest point of Mozambique, Namuli Mount (2,419 m), is found here.

Hot water springs
Known as “fontes quentes”, they bubble up near Morrumbala, Lugela, Mocuba, Nicoadala, Pebane, Maganja da Costa and Gilé. The water temperature is so high that it is possible to boil an egg or cook food in it.

Flora and Fauna

Gilé game reserve

With a wide variety of wild mammals and birds, it is a protected wildlife area.

Derre nature reserve
Located in the district of Morrumbaia, it has a variety of animals, with an abundance of roan antelope.

Madal safaris
Located in the district of Chinde, it is a large tourist destination, where visitors are able to hunt and bird watch.

Traditional gastronomy

Zambezia is famous for its traditional cooking witch is quite spicy. Zambezian chicken, grilled with palm oil, is known all round Mozambique, but few prepare it as perfectly as the Zambezians are able to do.
